Developmental
Edit
A developmental edit (sometimes called a substantive edit) is a big-picture level of editing. It does not analyze grammar, punctuation, or word usage. Instead it looks at aspects of the novel including (but not limited to) voice, pacing, word choice, character development, point of view, scene vs. summary, plot consistency, etc.
A developmental edit differs from a manuscript critique in that it offers extensive in-line comments throughout the entire manuscript. Each problematic spot in the manuscript will be flagged and suggestions will be made for revision.
Writers who put their stories through a developmental edit will come away with a thorough and clear plan for revisions.
